Key West Sandbar Tours
Experience Key West’s Most Beautiful Sandbars
There’s nothing quite like stepping off a boat into waist-deep, crystal-clear water with nothing but open sky, warm sand beneath your feet, and the wild beauty of the Key West backcountry stretching out in every direction. Salty Bottom Boats brings you to the sandbars that most visitors never find — the hidden gems where dolphins cruise by, stingrays glide beneath the surface, and the turquoise water looks like something out of a postcard. Our Key West sandbar tours are consistently rated among the best experiences in the Florida Keys, and once you step aboard, you will understand why.
Whether you are celebrating a bachelorette weekend with 30 of your closest friends or planning a laid-back family afternoon on the water, our private sandbar charters give you the freedom to make the day entirely your own. Captain Chad Harris and the Salty Bottom crew have spent over 12 years navigating these waters, and they know exactly where to anchor for the best conditions, the most wildlife, and the kind of memories you’ll be talking about for years.
What to Expect on Your Sandbar Tour
Every sandbar tour with Salty Bottom Boats is a private charter — no strangers, no crowds, just you and your crew. From the moment you step aboard at 701 Palm Ave, Key West, your captain takes the helm and guides you through the stunning backcountry waters to one of several pristine sandbar destinations. The ride itself is part of the adventure, with dolphins often surfacing alongside the boat and birds diving for fish as you cruise through the mangrove channels.
Once you arrive at the sandbar, we anchor up and the fun really begins. Wade into warm, shallow water that stays waist-deep for hundreds of feet. Break out the snorkel masks and explore the underwater world — you might spot tarpon, nurse sharks, barracudas, and schools of tropical fish right below the surface. Stretch out on our water mat and float under the Florida sun. We bring the floats, noodles, and snorkel gear — all included with every charter. You just bring the sunscreen and the good vibes.
Our sandbar tours are available as 4-hour or 6-hour private charters, giving you plenty of time to swim, snorkel, explore, eat, drink, and soak it all in. Bring your own cooler with food and drinks — there are no rules about what you bring aboard (yes, that includes your favorite drinks). Your captain will handle everything else.
The Wildlife You Will See
The Key West backcountry is one of the most biodiverse marine environments in North America, and our sandbar locations put you right in the middle of it. Our guests regularly encounter an incredible variety of wildlife during their tours:
- Bottlenose dolphins — Often spotted riding the boat’s wake or cruising near the sandbars. Seeing them in the wild never gets old.
- Tarpon — These massive silver fish are a Key West icon. Watch them roll at the surface near the sandbar’s edge.
- Nurse sharks — Harmless and curious, they’re common around the sandbars and always a thrill to spot while snorkeling.
- Southern stingrays and eagle rays — Graceful and beautiful, they glide through the shallows like underwater birds.
- Manatees — These gentle giants occasionally visit the backcountry waters, especially during cooler months.
- Barracudas — Sleek and fast, you’ll often see them hovering near the sandbar. They look intimidating but keep their distance.
- Bald eagles and ospreys — The skies above the backcountry islands are home to incredible birds of prey, including the rare Key West bald eagle.
The diversity of marine and bird life in this area is something you simply can’t experience from a crowded tour boat or a shore excursion. A private charter with Salty Bottom Boats puts you in the heart of it all, with a captain who knows exactly where and when the wildlife shows up.
Our Sandbar Destinations
Salty Bottom Boats has access to some of the most spectacular sandbar locations in the Lower Keys. Your captain selects the best destination based on tide, wind, and conditions to make sure you get the most out of your day. Our primary sandbar destinations include:
- Boca Grande Sandbar — One of the most popular and stunning sandbars in the Keys. Crystal-clear water, wide sandy flats, and some of the best snorkeling around. A favorite for large groups and celebrations.
- Snipes Keys — A quieter, more secluded destination perfect for groups that want privacy and calm waters. Excellent for wildlife watching.
- Jewfish Basin — A hidden backcountry paradise with shallow flats, incredible clarity, and abundant marine life. One of our captains’ go-to spots for a truly unforgettable experience.
