Key West Sandbar Destinations
Key West Sandbar Locations and Hidden Gems
Salty Bottom Boats doesn’t just take you out on the water — we take you to the best spots that Key West has to offer. Captain Chad and the crew have spent over 12 years exploring every sandbar, channel, mangrove island, and backcountry trail in the Lower Keys. That kind of local knowledge means you’re not getting a generic tour. You’re getting access to the places that most visitors never find.
Every charter is customizable, and your captain will choose the best destinations based on the weather, tides, and what your group wants to experience. Whether you’re chasing crystal-clear sandbars, world-class snorkeling, wildlife encounters, or a secluded spot for a private celebration, these are the six destinations we visit most.
Boca Grande Sandbar
Boca Grande is one of the most stunning sandbars in the Key West backcountry — and it’s where Salty Bottom Boats takes guests who want that picture-perfect experience. The water here is pristine, shallow, and impossibly clear. You can wade out chest-deep and still see your toes on the sandy bottom. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget your phone exists (after you take a few photos, of course).
Boca Grande is perfect for swimming, floating, and soaking up the sun with your group. It’s also one of our most popular spots for celebrations — bachelorette parties, birthdays, and family reunions all feel a little more magical when the backdrop is turquoise water stretching out in every direction. The crew will anchor up, set out the floats, and let you enjoy the sandbar at your own pace. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins cruising through the channel nearby.
Snipes Keys
Ask a local where their favorite spot is, and there’s a good chance they’ll say Snipes Keys. This cluster of small mangrove islands sits in the backcountry northwest of Key West, surrounded by shallow, crystal-clear water that’s ideal for wading, snorkeling, and exploring. It’s the kind of place that feels untouched — because most tourists never make it out here.
The snorkeling around Snipes Keys is outstanding. The shallow flats are home to starfish, conch, juvenile reef fish, and the occasional nurse shark gliding along the bottom. Your captain will find the best spot based on the tide, and the crew will have snorkel gear ready for anyone who wants to get a closer look at what’s beneath the surface. Snipes Keys is also a favorite for photographers — the light on the water here is absolutely unreal, especially in the late afternoon.
Jewfish Basin
If snorkeling is at the top of your list, Jewfish Basin is where you want to be. This secluded area in the Key West backcountry is home to some of the most diverse underwater ecosystems you’ll find outside of a coral reef. The basin’s protected waters are teeming with marine life — sea turtles, rays, barracuda, tropical fish, and the goliath grouper (jewfish) that gave the area its name.
Jewfish Basin is our premier snorkeling destination. The water clarity is exceptional, and the variety of species you can encounter on a single visit is remarkable. Captain Chad and the crew know exactly where to anchor for the best underwater viewing, and they’ll point out the wildlife you might otherwise swim right past. This is an experience that nature lovers, families with curious kids, and anyone who wants more than just a sandbar day will remember long after they’ve left Key West.

Mud Keys
The Mud Keys are a chain of small, uninhabited mangrove islands that feel like stepping into a nature documentary. The water here is calm and shallow, surrounded by pristine mangrove forests that serve as nurseries for juvenile fish, crabs, and shrimp. It’s one of the quietest, most peaceful spots in the Lower Keys backcountry — the kind of place where the only sounds are birds calling and water lapping against the hull.
This destination is a favorite for nature photography and birdwatching. Herons, egrets, pelicans, and ospreys are year-round residents, and during migration season you might spot even rarer species moving through. The Mud Keys are also excellent for kayaking if you want to explore the mangrove channels up close. Your captain will navigate the shallow waters to find the best anchorage, giving you time to soak in one of Key West’s most untouched natural landscapes.
Key West Backcountry
The Key West backcountry is a vast, protected network of hidden mangrove trails, shallow flats, and sheltered swimming spots stretching north and west of Key West. Most visitors never venture beyond the harbor — but the backcountry is where the real magic happens. This is where Salty Bottom Boats shines, because our shallow-draft vessels (especially the Salty Tiki) can access channels and coves that deeper-hulled boats simply can’t reach.
A backcountry excursion with Salty Bottom Boats means winding through narrow mangrove-lined waterways, spotting dolphins and manatees in their natural habitat, and finding protected swimming and wading spots where the water is warm, calm, and perfectly clear. The backcountry is also home to some of Key West’s best sunset viewing — when the sun drops below the mangrove horizon line, the sky lights up in oranges, pinks, and purples that you won’t see anywhere else. If you want a true insider’s tour of Key West’s wild side, this is it.
Open Water Experiences
Not every great day on the water involves dropping anchor. Sometimes the ride is the experience. Salty Bottom Boats’ open water runs take you out into the Gulf of Mexico for high-speed rides, dolphin watching, and panoramic Gulf views that stretch from horizon to horizon. There’s something about being out on open water — wind in your hair, music playing, nothing but blue in every direction — that hits different.
Our captains know where the dolphins hang out, and during open water runs it’s common to see pods of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins riding the wake alongside the boat. The crew will slow down so your group can watch, take photos, and enjoy the moment. Open water experiences pair perfectly with a sandbar stop — cruise out, enjoy the ride and the wildlife, then anchor up at one of our other destinations for swimming and relaxing before heading home.
Your Adventure Starts Here
Every Salty Bottom Boats charter is fully customizable. Your captain will work with you to plan the perfect route based on your group’s interests, the weather, and the tides. Whether you want to hit multiple sandbars, spend the whole day snorkeling Jewfish Basin, or cruise the backcountry looking for dolphins — it’s your call.
